!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has a pretty neat piece on the new F-150 and how they improved the crash test results. The article is complete with awesome gif's of the computer simulations.

The automaker's engineers also looked at the frame of the truck, focusing their efforts on what they call the front crush horn. It's the chunk of the frame that absorbs force in a frontal crash. It's crucial, because every bit of force sucked up isn't applied to the structure that surrounds the occupants. The engine compartment gets crunched so the driver doesn't.

In slightly related news a salesman showed up at work on Tuesday driving one of the new aluminium F-150's. I can confirm that the tailgate is significantly lighter than my steel tailgate. It took about 1/3 the effort to open and close it when compared to mine.

That's why you put a topper on it. That does make it a bitch to put your beer bottles in the bed, but you can fit more of them. It's all about the bass compromises.

/now that song is stuck in your head

Sucks when she forgets to put out the cones. Obviously she never worked for a telecom or utility company.

I wonder what efforts are put into making the rear of pickup trucks better for crashing purposes? Traditionally they are beefed up for towing / payload purposes, and according to my understanding of things attaching a trailer hitch to a crumple zone would be a bad idea.

Also, with the tailgate, a lot of new trucks have a spring assist built in. Mine does, so it opens slowly instead of slamming down, and it's to close with minimal effort.

The crash force would transfer through the frame and the front crumple zone would absorb the energy in the case of a heavy rear end crash where the truck was unable to move forward to dissipate energy.

I've got a 2011 F-150 and the new ones are noticeably lighter. I do have an add on tailgate assist that lets me open the latch and let it drop without it slamming down, but it is still much heavier than the new ones when it comes to closing it.

And it locks with the truck so the lighter tailgate is less likely to be stolen. And he can hit a button to put the tailgate down if it's a high enough trim level.
